Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Shield of Sparrows was my first 5-star read in a while, and honestly, it felt so good to finally get completely swept up in a book again after reading several that just didn’t hit the mark. This one reminded me of everything I love about reading, a story that pulls you in, characters you care about, and writing that makes you want to keep turning the pages.
Was it predictable? Yes. You can see the twist coming from early on, but that didn’t ruin a thing for me. Sometimes, it’s not about being shocked, it’s about the emotional journey, the connection you feel with the characters, and the way a story is told. This book delivered all of that and more. It’s a slower burn, but a really satisfying one. I never felt bored or like it dragged. In fact, I found myself completely enjoying the pace, it gave space for the characters to grow and the relationships to build in a natural and believable way.
I loved the dynamic between the main characters, the banter, the tension, and the emotional vulnerability they showed. Their individual growth and healing were just as satisfying as the romance itself. There’s something really comforting about a story that doesn’t rush but still keeps you completely engaged.
This was my first time reading anything by Devney Perry, and I was impressed. I didn’t want to put the book down, and I genuinely enjoyed myself every step of the way. I’m so excited for the next in the series and wish we didn’t have to wait.
If you’re looking for a book that’s heartfelt, engaging, and full of emotion, with a good mix of tension, warmth, and depth, Shield of Sparrows is absolutely worth picking up.
