Onyx Storm Book Review

Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Empyrean series continues to deliver with Onyx Storm, the third installment in Rebecca Yarros’ dragon-filled, heart-pounding saga. While nothing quite recaptures the magic of Fourth Wing, this book still manages to take the story in thrilling new directions, keeping me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

One of the things I appreciated most about Onyx Storm was the character development. The returning characters from Iron Flame showed incredible growth, and even though some readers felt there were too many new names to keep track of, I personally felt the additions made sense for the story. This is a war, after all, and with war comes new alliances, new enemies, and an expanding world that I find fascinating rather than overwhelming. Yarros does a fantastic job balancing these elements without making it feel like an info dump.

The complexity of the plot also stood out. Some fantasy series start feeling repetitive by the third book, but Onyx Storm avoids that trap entirely. The story continues evolving, with new twists, deeper layers of political intrigue, and emotional stakes that feel even higher than before. There were moments that hit hard—I found myself sobbing at multiple points, completely immersed in the characters’ struggles and triumphs.

Now, let’s talk about the last 25% of the book. If the first three-quarters were a thrilling ride, the final stretch was a full-blown emotional storm. The pacing, which was already fast, kicked into high gear, and I could not put the book down. The tension, the revelations, the absolute chaos of it all—this is what I live for as a reader. And then that ending. I have so many questions, and the fact that we have to wait literal years for answers is borderline cruel. But that’s also part of the fun of these kinds of books—every fan is left theorizing, dissecting every detail, and spiraling into speculation. I love that feeling of being completely obsessed with a world and its characters.

Speaking of obsession… Xaden. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—he is the perfect male character, love interest, and ultimate book boyfriend. He surpasses every other shadow daddy out there. Honestly, if a man isn’t exactly like Xaden, it’s just not worth it. 😂 He has the depth, the loyalty, the power, and the complexity that makes him an unforgettable character.

I also want to address the unnecessary hate this series gets just because it’s wildly popular. Not every book is for every reader, and that’s fine, but the need some people have to tear it down just because others love it? I’ll never get it. For me, The Empyrean series is everything I want in a fantasy—dragons, magic, romance, high stakes, and a gripping story that keeps me fully engaged. Yes, the plot can be complex and sometimes overwhelming, but I love that. I appreciate books that challenge me to think, analyze, and feel deeply.

Onyx Storm was a rollercoaster of emotions, action, and jaw-dropping moments. I’m still processing that ending, and the wait for the next book is going to be torture. But in the meantime, I’ll have to find other books to get lost in—though let’s be honest, The Empyrean series has set the bar high.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (because let’s be real, Xaden alone earns all five stars)
