As the second book in the Powerless trilogy, Reckless by Lauren Roberts completely exceeded my expectations. Middle books in trilogies often feel like filler, but not this one—it was engaging, intense, and thoroughly satisfying.

One of the standout elements for me was the romance. I love romance in general, but I’ve realized I enjoy it far more in fantasy settings than in modern or realistic romance stories. There’s something about the heightened stakes and rich worlds of fantasy that make the romance even more impactful. The relationship dynamics in Reckless were no exception. Kai stole my heart—he’s everything I adore in a love interest: morally grey, tough on the outside, but soft and emotional underneath. The intensity between him and Paeden was palpable and kept me hooked.

This book also gave me so much of what I wanted to see in the story. It avoided the frustration that often comes with trilogies, where you’re left feeling like you’re waiting for everything to happen in the final book. Instead, Reckless delivered satisfying payoffs while still keeping the stakes high and the twists exciting.

I devoured this book—it was such a fast and enjoyable read. Now that I’m done, I feel genuinely sad to leave these characters behind until the third book releases in April. I’m already counting down the days. I especially loved seeing Kitt’s transformation and appreciated the clever foreshadowing for some of the twists. The pacing was perfect, and the emotional intensity kept me glued to the pages.

If you’re a fan of the Powerless series or just love a well-paced fantasy with romance, morally grey characters, and emotional depth, Reckless is a must-read. It’s a book that sticks with you long after you turn the last page—and leaves you eagerly waiting for more.
