The Housemaid by Freida McFadden

After hearing so many recommendations and seeing The Handmaid pop up everywhere, I decided to give it a try, even though it’s not my usual genre. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by how gripping this book turned out to be. It’s been a while since I’ve come across a novel that I genuinely couldn’t put down, and this one had me turning the pages late into the night. The pacing was spot-on, and the suspense was enough to keep me hooked from start to finish. Freida McFadden does a great job building tension and throwing in twists that, while not shocking, still kept the story moving.
That said, I did find some aspects a bit predictable. As the plot unfolded, I often felt like I could guess what was coming next. While this didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment, it left me wanting a bit more complexity, especially considering the hype about how “clever” the storyline was supposed to be. For me, it didn’t quite live up to the idea of being an incredibly smart or mind-blowing thriller, but it was still fun and entertaining.
One of the things I struggled with was the characters. I didn’t find myself really rooting for or connecting with any of them, which, in a book like this, can sometimes take away from the overall experience. I wasn’t particularly invested in their fates, which made the twists and turns less impactful than they could have been. However, the plot itself was fast-paced enough to make up for that, and I stayed engaged through sheer curiosity about how it would all play out.
Overall, The Handmaid was a thrilling, page-turning read that offered a nice break from the more intricate novels I usually gravitate toward. While it wasn’t as unpredictable or character-driven as I might have hoped, it was still a highly enjoyable book, and it was fun to get lost in a story for a few hours. If you’re looking for a fast, entertaining read with a good amount of suspense, this one will likely hit the spot.
I won’t be continuing with the series. While I had fun with The Handmaid, I don’t feel compelled to dive deeper into the world or characters. Still, I’m glad I gave it a chance—it was refreshing to read something that kept me so engaged, and sometimes, that’s all you really need from a good book!
